We are running out of time! The need to take measures to save our planet has never been as urgent as it is today, as we inch towards a disaster that we have created for ourselves. What's surprising though is the fact that we continue to pollute the environment, in spite of knowing where we are heading. For a start, let's have a look at some numbers.
In developing countries, around 90% of wastewater and 70% of the industrial waste are thrown into rivers, lakes and coastal areas. It is estimated that 14 billion pounds of garbage is dumped into the ocean every year. According to the National Autombile Dealers Association, 1.3 million light vehicles were sold in the United States in Frbruary 2015---an increase of 5.4% from last February.
Such is our desire for development that we seem to have forgotten that we're polluting the very surroundings we live in. when it comes to pollution, the most common forms are air pollution, which is caused by harmful gases released(排放)into the Earth's atmosphere, water pollution, which is caused by harmful chemicals introduced in water sources, and soil or land pollution, which is caused by harmful chemicals introduced in the soil. Other forms of pollution include noise pollution, radiation pollution, thermal pollution(热污染), etc. Each of these forms of pollution affects the environment greatly and eventually, it results in a domino effect(多米诺效应)on the planet.
